Okay, I'm curious about this now. Is it a manga?

And I'd love to hear your thoughts on yaoi, OP. I remember when I first read Hoshi no Yakata and desperately wanting to talk to people about it because it was so freaking dramatic, but it's an old manga and none of my friends are into yaoi.

Oh man, Hoshi no Yakata! That's a classic.

I wish BL had more fandom. Even the big name ones like, say, Viewfinder, don't really have proper fandoms (though I think there was an LJ comm back in the day, not super active but a few megafans gathered anyway!). Of course, that could be because there's not enough people reading these BL manga at the same time - I'd think most people just find them online and they could've already been out for ten years or whatever. Something like Killing Stalking, which does have a fandom, is definitely out of the norm (and probably owes most of its popularity to the name recognition it got in Yuri on Ice fandom, which isn't really a true BL but nonetheless probably the closest BL fans will get to a megafandom).

(the picture in question is from Warehouse, a Korean webcomic on Lezhin, but it doesn't have an official English translation yet)

Have you read Maiden Rose? That one was always my favorite, but it's shame that the authors apparently abandoned it. :(

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
God damn I wish Maiden Rose had kept going.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I know right. The military stuff honestly bored me a little, but the two main dudes had a really interesting (and a little fucked up) relationship and I would of loved to see where it went.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I have not! But now you've given me the tough choice whether or not to start a series that I know was discontinued, lol.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, Maiden Rose got abandoned? Damn, I really liked that one and would always wonder how it would end.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt
There hasn't been an update in years, so yeah. It's a good chance it's a dead series. ;(

Maiden Rose isn't abandoned. She changed publishers but then began releasing dj's of the series because there were some issues with them.

Thank you for the info on Warehouse! I'll have to keep an eye out for it in case it gets an English translation.

I really liked the style for Hoshi no Yataka and tried to find other scans for the mangaka's other works, but I only found one other and it was a little weird. There was an anime message board I used to be a part of that had a BL section, but it didn't see much activity. I do remember someone holding up Okane Ga Nai as the pinnacle of excellence in yaoi, which made me lol a little because the bodily proportions were so awful. I agree that we're all reading the same manga at the wrong time. Plus, sometimes it's hard and disillusioning to have to sort through pages of junk manga before finding a gem. I never knew there was a manga set in Okane Ga Nai's universe (and starring way more interesting characters) until someone on here brought it up and I ended up finding about Honto Yajuu (one of my favorite yaoi manga) from another anon here.

Warehouse is kind of interesting, it's semi PWP but pretty intense and psychological, too. The art (not a super great example from the OP) is also pretty dynamic and neat, it's a lot more deliberately stylized. Hope it gets an official translation on Lezhin soon.

Ack, Okane ga Nai lol. It's kind of weird that one is so popular and even got an anime, the art is supbar and the plot super boring imo. The uke was creepy looking as fuck, and the seme was about six times bigger than him lol. There are a ton of junk BL out there, but I think between both Japan and Korea, there's getting to be more out there that have a different plot other than the old 2 guys meet, seme pursues and/or rapes uke, uke snivels and deliberates about it before deciding he's madly in love with seme after all, happy ending. I admit I kind of like BL bodice-rippers, but it's fun to stumble across ones that have a little more interesting characterization, or, heaven forbid, an engaging plot.

Lol I remember the seme's hand looking like it could crush the uke's head. I swear, very few good BL stories get an anime. I do like the bodice-ripper type stories too with all those dumb seme/uke dynamics, but too many of them bore me. I'm always pleasantly surprised when I read a BL manga with an actual plot or with the two guys switching (not enough of the IMHO) or when *gasp* they're actually gay and struggling with their identity and trying to fit into society.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, any BL that mentions one of the characters identifying as gay to me instantly gets points. Or at any point they have to "come out" to peers/etc. and not just hide it. It's always a bit of a pleasant surprise. I'd also love to read more switches, or at least where neither character is visually "the seme" vs "the uke". But then again, I also kind of like the seme/uke visual aesthetic (as long as the uke doesn't look like a fucking six-year-old and the seme doesn't have three men's worth of shoulders). I can think of a few BL I'd love to see proper anime for, but I guess the problem is they are generally too mature/violent for a studio to ever consider. Basically almost every BL anime adaptation is fluff. Well, with like.... two major exceptions I guess.

there is still a trickle of activity on the yamane_ayano comm on LJ. Viewfinder news, and summaries of new chapters of Crimson Spell ( and Look into the Abyss, I think, but I don't follow that one.)

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I find this heartwarming. If only I dared touch LJ again, I'd go post a few things just as a show of support.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
There is actually a very active yaoi/ BL forum called Aarinfantasy where both old and new manga and anime are discussed, if anyone is interested.
