Yeah, that's my thought. I'll definitely watch the movie either way, but I'm kind of confused why they even kept the same character names if they were just going to completely change the characters. I'll wait to judge too harshly until I've seen it, but I was a little shocked to see the trailer imply that Light and Misa are running around in a mutual romantic relationship Kira duo causing trouble against school bullies, and L screaming at them.

Yeah I could honestly find it interesting to see someone else take on the Death Note and considering how long shinigami can live there's just about any time and place you could take it.

But the instant they gave that guy the first name "Light" all I could think about was how not Light-like he was. I know when I watch the movie my mind will just be making comparisons the whole way through but if they had just made it a brand new story I might have been able to compare a little less.

It's really a shame for Light especially, tbh. I honestly feel he's one of the most interesting anime characters of all time. He's fascinating and extremely divisive. While fans interpret him a million different ways (and even the Japanese live-action movies didn't portray Light quite like how he was in the original), I really don't get why you'd toss out such a fantastic character like that in favor of writing your own with the same name. I think it's Light really makes Death Note the series that it is, love him or hate him, he's the sort of character that gets people talking. Just so strange to throw away the opportunity to use a character like that on the big screen.

Yeah I'll be interested to see why narratively they felt the need to change him and what direction this "Light" takes the story in.

I don't know right now why they made the decision to change him so much, Light's personality could have worked in the movie. Making the story shorter can pose challenges but there is a ton of content in the main story you can cut without taking away the basic personality of the main characters.
