Bioware really struggles with consistent world-building. It's SO obvious in Dragon Age especially. And as a result, the story built on top of it and the characters are all sort of janky. It's like a castle built on sand. The lore is inconsistent and weak, so the plot revolving around it is inconsistent and weak, so the character interactions are weak, and so on.
Mass Effect is better, because they put a lot of work into Mass Effect 1's world building and plotting and it shows. It started as a very well thought out universe, and that helped keep the later games more on track imo. But the character writing is even worse than DA's.
