OK, some of you may know that First Consul Bonaparte valued the Louisiana Territory less highly than Saint-Domingue (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). And that France was already facing revolt in Haiti, and lost it forever within a year.

And some of you presumably know that the sale of Louisiana to the USA was very soon after the French forced the Spanish to cede Louisiana back to France; the Yanks were sniffing around Paris trying to confirm it and get Bonaparte to sell it before it had been even announced. They say that within the territory, by the time the news came of the handover, it was actually already two handovers; they lowered the Spanish flag, raised the French one, then immediately lowered the French flag to raise the USA flag.

What very few people know is this: The sale of Louisiana to the USA was in violation of the French treaty with Spain that ceded Louisiana back to France. The whole thing's illegal. For once the USA's westward expansion relied on someone else breaking a treaty.
