That's good :) my career is still on the way, and I hope I'll love it in the future - at the moment it's mostly misery and struggle.

(the languages thing is not so minor for me, because it's directly linked to my job, so the anxiety about that is real)

At least there's room to grow from here in your career. I worry that I'm going to become stagnant, but I live comfortably and I'm stashing away cash and padding my retirement account now while I still can.

I really think 30 is what you make of it. Are you doing anything special?

My mom and I are going to see Aladdin on Broadway next month and then I'm going to go to a Yankees game. This way it's something special, but nothing over the top.

Oh and ice cream cake, of course.

I'm in academia, so it's all long-term hopes, and not much for the now.

Part of my melancholy is that I'm alone in a foreign country, don't have many friends, and am quite isolated. The real celebrations will probably be when I go home for a visit in a month. So for now, it's just me and my sads.
I'm thinking of buying myself a birthday present, but I'm not sure what I want, yet.
Maybe instead of an object I'll gift myself with a day off to work on cosplay or something.

Your plans all sound lovely :)

Honestly, I buy myself Christmas presents and birthday presents, this way I make it a little special for me, so yes treat yo self!

So if you're in academia that means your current job is probably temporary, or at least hopefully you'll be able to move to a bigger area at some point where you'll be able to make new friends.

Up until this year, I found it hard to make new friends and all of my friends are scattered around the US but for some reason I made a whole new circle of friends here who like to get together and it's been wonderful so I hope you're able to find that.
