The truth is, I know jack-all about smokey, because my eyes are too deep sunk for it. If I put eyeshadow on you just don't see it - it vanishes into my eyelid fold. I can draw a damn smiley on my eyelid and you wouldn't see it when my eyes are open. That's why I focus on eye pencils, because those stand out more.
The blending on these is just the pencils themselves - they've got great pigments, so I just run each one a little over the edges of the previous, and it blends like a charm.
So I'm afraid I'm no help to you at all :((((
(I also don't use mascara - I have been gifted with lots of lashes, as you can see)

Okay, fangirling notwithstanding, it's actually good to know that it works for somebody just using the right kind of pencil. Maybe it's just a matter of finding a good pencil/makeup combo. Thanks for the reply anyway!

What you want for good blending are the pencils with strong pigment that are on the soft side - just running them over your hand, you should be able to get a nice layer of color. If they're that strong, you should have no problem blending them. Though I will also say, in this case its pencils blended with pencils - I haven't tried "smearing" the pencils to blend, because I want pencils that will be long-lasting.
Good pencils may be a little pricey, but I've found that they're worth the investment for me (especially since I don't use eyeshadows).
If you go to a store that has testers, you can also try blending the pencils and see that it works before getting them. I do actually have *some* eyeshadows, and in the event of blending them with pencil, I usually layer them over the pencil (and sometimes then go back and reinforce the pencil line).

I feel you on this. I have a bit more mobile lid than you do, but my eyes are deep set, not-quite-down-turned, and with a pretty small mobile lid. So eye shadow tends to just look kind of 'meh' on me at best, and murky at worst. A little bit of beige just above the crease is about as much as my eye area can handle, and even then I'm not really sure if it looks better or worse than nothing at all. And eyeliner is always ridiculously finicky, what with making it thin enough that it doesn't swallow my lid whole, and then pulling it up early so that it doesn't drag down my eye.
The last time I did a winged look, I redid it twice until I got it as good as it could get - and then this dude at my local coffee shop told me I looked really tired that day. :(
Meanwhile, sales associates at Sephora are all, "Oh, no, you have GREAT eyes for wearing shadow and liner." NO. PLEASE STOP.
