I-I love crossovers

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but

Crossovers are really cool, but the kind of crossover OP is talking about is rarely good IME. They tend to focus way too much on the larger fandom.

Good crossovers are a challenge to write, but a ton of fun if they work. The more esoteric the better have always been the best ones for me.

This. Also their more annoying cousins, 'character from big fandom meets every small-fandom character their actor ever played' and variations thereof. I want fanfic for this fandom and these characters, not a cameo tour of an actor's greatest hits.

I hate this so much! I'm generally a fan of crossovers, but this kind is fucking annoying.

I like that kind of crossover and write quite a few of them. Thus said, I can see why it would be really really annoying to have to wade through pages of Fandom X/ Fandom Y crossover stories when you just want a story that's pure Fandom X.

I'm sorry for contributing to the problem, OP. I wish there was a good way to filter out the stuff you're not interested in.

On the one hand I'm a fan of Broadchurch who doesn't watch Doctor Who so I can relate.

On the other hand there's a decent amount of regular Broadchurch fic that I can read and the crossover writers aren't hurting me any.

I like good crossovers that work. Some do and some don't.

I don't hate crossovers, but it sucks to be disappointed by how many fics for your small fandoms are just fusions with larger ones that barely feature the former characters if they do at all.

Also, I feel immediate solidarity with anyone who's ever complained about that cursed Epic Rap Battles thing on AO3.

Oh, agreed. I love crossovers, but there are limits, you know? And it really annoys me when something is tagged with a canon, but the extent of that canon's involvement is 'one character appears in one scene', or something like that.
And it makes me irrationally angry when I go to the Magnificent Seven tag on AO3 and the top fic, by kudos, is a Teen Wolf fic.

I don't hate them, but one of my main fandoms is full of crossover fic starring a variety of characters played by this one actor, paired with one of his character's significant other from one show. So almost every character he's ever played, even many of the ones with canon love interests, paired wifh one single character who also has a canon love interest. Weirdest fucking thing.

This is a huge problem with the Ghost Protocol-tag. It's extremely difficult to find Will Brandt-fic that isn't "Will Brandt is secretly Clint Barton."
