Hmm. Well I certainly don't think he ever assumed he would be able to live in the human world. In episode 22, Matsuka asks Keith what will happen to him after the battle, and Keith tells him straight up that he will be "disposed of". Keith never offered Matsuka any kind of hope that he would be able to keep survivng, and he never held back from telling Matsuka that he was only using him as a pawn. Matsuka knew he was facing certain death by staying with Keith. He didn't choose to out of some hollow hope that he would be able to hide out among humanity forever and ever, he did it just because he felt bad for Keith. Even Keith recognized this, naming Matsuka's compassion as his fatal weakness.

Everyone else treated Keith like some robot, a machine, heartless. Matsuka stayed around out of hope that Keith harbored real emotion and warmth deep down inside-- but he wasn't forcing himself to believe that for his own sake, he kept trying to believe it for Keith's sake. And of course he actively tried to make a difference when he was with Keith! In this case, actions speak louder than words. Read between the lines, honey. He did so by saving Keith's life when he had been captured by the Mu, and again by saving him from the explosion when Soldier Blue destroyed the Megido, and again when a soldier tried to assassinate Keith upon his arrival, and again when he died so that Keith could live. He was actively trying simply by staying in Keith's company when all logic should have told him to get the hell out of there. And if you must have something verbal, in episode 22, he insists to Keith, "You heart is kinder, more human than anyone's," and gets a slap in the face for it. I could name more things, but if all of this isn't actively trying to reach Keith than I don't know what is.

Matsuka died for Keith because he saw something in Keith that very few others did, when it would have been a million times easier to stop believing something so difficult and walk away. Sry2say but that is very brave, and very kind. I really think you missed some things when you watched the show, lol, because Matsuka's attitude towards Keith is very, very tied into the overall point of the show: that humans and Mu need to embrace the future together.

How could he not assume he was going to live in the human world? That was exactly what he was trying to do, hide his powers and live normally. You talk like he didn't have a life before he met Keith and taking my statement wrong. If he hadn't of met Keith he still wouldn't of had a place in the human world no matter how much he tried to deny what he was and blend in with society. And then, yes, meeting with Keith and staying with him basically sealed his fate that he wouldn't be able to live normally among humans.

As I said to another commenter I don't really see the fact that he stayed by Keith's side despite his treatment as a good thing. I see it like battered wife syndrome. He hopes deep down inside that Keith will turn around, will show him that compassion he believes he has in him. He sticks around even though he is abused verbally and mentally just out of hope. In the end yeah he is right, but only because things happened to shift and work out that way. It would have been just as easy for things to go wrong, for the Mu to fail and for Keith to just dispose of him in the end. I'm all for the power of friendship/love/whatever you want to see it as, but when you spend years being abused just out of some hope things will get better I don't sympathize and I don't see it as a wonderful thing. And I don't see Matsuka saving Keith's life all those as trying to change his point of view though I suppose I can understand how you see it that way. To me, however, doesn't really count.

And I didn't miss a damn thing, because I still enjoy the show and it's still one of my favorites. Just because I don't like a character doesn't mean I don't get the whole concept of the show.

The fact that he existed among humans trying to hide his abnormality for as long as he could doesn't justify your previous statement that he thought he could "live in the human world for the rest of his life" out of stupidity. He knew very well that he was just biding his time, especially after he found out about the existence of Mu from Keith. Matsuka wasn't a moron, there was no way for him to know about all the abilities of the Mu like the long lifespan. Until he was confronted with evidence that he was a part of some separate race, Matsuka just thought he was some lone freak of nature with weird powers. He tried to hide himself among humans pre-Keith because what else was there for him to do?

I disagree with you about Matsuka having something like battered wife syndrome, because like you said that would imply his actions are based on hope for his own life getting better. And like I said in my other reply, I don't think Matsuka was hoping for Keith to have a heart out of concern for his own well being; if that were the case-- if his own well being were the influencing factor, then he would never have gone back to save Keith, the only person who had seen through his disguise thus far, from the Mu on Nazca. He would have left Keith there and his problem would have been solved, for the moment at least. That to me is the proof that he believed in Keith for Keith's well being, because he could tell Keith needed someone, and not for his own sake, or else why risk his own well being to do something completely unnecessary and save Keith?

I don't say you're missing something cause you don't like Matsuka. I'm just saying that because I mean, at the very end of the show, Jomy and Keith have both decided that the Mother computer thing needs to be destroyed because they have hope that Mu and humans will be able to work things out on their own, and to live together. This was the very same hope that Matsuka had, which you write off as battered wife syndrome. So by the same logic, Jomy's last words, that people are amazing, and that he believes in them despite everything they have inflicted on him and his people, is also just some battered wife syndrome. And that's just not right at all. The message of the show is hope, and Matsuka embodies that in his own way. You don't have to like him, but I think it's going way overboard to call him stupid, a pussy, and all that other crap.
