I'm a little surprised at the judgement in this thread, because I always assumed these were aimed at kids - like Beanie Babies were supposed to be originally, before they became "valuable" - hence the lower price and wider availability. I can see why people would still get snobby about that, though. One must put away childish thigs and move on to horrifically expensive ball-jointed dolls or whatever.

It's different with the internet, but up through my teenage years, if you wanted fannish merch you needed either the right kind of comic book (or video) shop, or a convention dealers' room, both of which can be hard to access under your own steam when you aren't even old enough to drive and don't have much money. I have zero interest in collecting figures of any kind, but I'm not going to begrudge kids something they can afford by saving up their allowance and go pick up at the Hot Topic at the mall.
