Re: Age Gaps in Fiction

Replying to myself with more thoughts. I like age-gaps because they're kind of a built in sort of character conflict, but also in fic what you read is what you get. It doesn't matter beyond suspension of disbelief how realistic it is.

I read a thing one time that said Wash and Zoe's relationship in Firefly was inherently non-consensual because in the real world due to the power dynamics inherent in both society's misogyny and society's racism it was impossible to have a consensual relationship between a white man and a black woman. And ok, even if you believe that to be 100% true, IT'S STILL FICTIONAL. Therefore if the fiction says they're in a healthy and consensual relationship then you can't really pull "Well, in OUR universe..." into it.

And it's ok if you can't suspend your disbelief. With CSI and Grissom/Sara I just couldn't see any chemistry between them and he narrative attempts to convince me they were super duper in love just confused me.

But if I found a fic that was something like... Qui-Gon survives Darth Maul's attack, but Obi-Wan still trains Anakin and as an adult Anakin falls in love with Qui-Gon? Heck, I'd give it a shot, and if the fic did a good job of presenting it all as consensual and healthy and something that both characters are happy with I'd go with it. Same as if a fic painted Linda and Bob Belcher's relationship as deeply unhappy and abusive I'd accept it in the fic (I mean, I still wouldn't see it that way in canon! But I'd be cool with the idea that in this fanfic they have an unhealthy relationship.) And truthfully I tend to like fics that start out with a much less plausible scenario because it feels like the author is going to work harder to convince the reader.

So yeah. It's a plot device I like. As long as the characters are at least old enough to pilot a Gundam in canon I can suspend disbelief and be cool with them happily dating, including dating characters older than them in canon. But I'm cool with people not being able to suspend disbelief and/or being squicked by it as long as they don't go around screaming the P word at everyone over it.
