Fostering cats

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Should I or shouldn't I?! Love cats, can't commit long term to one due to various work-related issues. Been thinking about fostering temporarily though, anyone done it?

My apartment allows pets, though there is a ridiculous expensive pet deposit + monthly cat rent. I wonder what my chances are of getting that waived if I tell them it's only temporary..

Don't. Cats are not worth it.

I think it's worth a shot. They could always say no.

But please calculate that schedule of yours accurately, and make sure there's someone who can come in and feed/change litter in the event of an emergency.

And of course, make sure you can afford it. Not just in monthly apartment fees, but in food, toys, medical expenses, and so on. Also, depending on how often you do this, be aware that not all cats may enjoy the fact that another cat was there before them.

With fostering, at least some shelters will pay for all needs like food and medical expenses. I know my local shelter does.

I'd say go for it with a few things to ask yourself.
Will the work related things be a problem for fosters too?
Will the shelter you're working with cover costs? How much?
Are you emotionally able to handle both adopting out cats and the possibility that some might pass away in your care?

This is good advice.

The last one is not something people really want to think about, but I follow a few kitten foster blogs and all of them have had at least one tragedy in their care. Kittens can be perfectly fine and then suddenly extremely sick, especially if they're exposed to shelter-germs.

NAYRT

That reason (plus the fact that honestly if I took an animal in I'd have a very very very hard time not getting attached to the point where I wouldn't want to give it back) is the biggest reason of why I don't foster.

Secondary is one my own cats is a total bitch who barely gets along with my second cat so I can't see her taking it well if I suddenly had a revolving door of pets, lol.

I'd say it's worth a try. It's good that you recognize that you can't keep them longterm at this time in your life and it's often a big help to foster animals.

I will say though, it's easy to get attached to the kittens so keep in mind that you have to give them up. For some people that ends up being really hard.
