You do know the first Doctor was not young, right? The original? The basis for the show you watch? In fact, the majority of the original Doctors were not young. And most of them were grumpy. That is just his character!

I'd even hesitate to call Nine young, especially since there is only a few years difference between him and Capaldi.

Young Doctors are the minority.

Tom Baker was considered the young, hot Doctor when he was cast. Pretty sure he was the first under 50.

To be more specific...

There's been exactly 1 Doctor who was under 30 at the start, 27 year old Matt Smith.

2 more under 40, Jodie Whittaker (35) and Peter Davison (33).

3 more under 50, Tom Baker (40), Christopher Eccleston (41), and David Tennant (44).

The other 7 have all been in their 50s. (One felt like he was in his 60s, though...poor fellow aged way before his time.)

Smith was 26, Davison 29 and Tennant 34 when they were cast.

Oops, re: Davison and Tennant, apparently my brain only remembered when they left and decided that was when they started. That was pretty Dumb, and kind of dinged my point. v_v

(OTOH, I was referring to when they started, not when they were cast, so Tennant was the only serious oops, since Davison was still 30 when his run began.)
