Now that you mention it, it is a bit weird that the times where I have seen discussion of the books (and I talk now exclusively about the problematic aspects), it does seem always in relation to the show. Like, there's a point to be made that the books contain a lot of unnecessary violence and creepiness, but the show handled some of the more importance instances so clumsily (and added a bit more of the ~good old sex and violence~) that, even if all characters involved were aged up, it seems to gather even more negative attention and, added to the whole writing mess, makes the books look a lot better in comparison.
