Really? I felt really let down because the first episode was a lot more promising than the show ended up being.

I think the first 3 episodes or so were very strong. It's when they start hitting the road for the skating competitions that the pacing really stumbled.

This. I found the skating episodes to be boring as hell, but the episodes just about Yuuri and Viktor were fun.
