This, but also moral policing wasn't anywhere near as common as it is now. Of course, there's a lot more online fandom stuff now than there was even ten years ago, and with that increase also comes an increase in the "how very dare you write X pairing, don't you know how problematic it is omg you're worse than Hitler" crowd. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, I suppose.
