They are the strawman. The weirdest thing about this secret is that OP doesn't sound like a person who prioritizes travel and socializing and the outdoors at all -- people who are actually like that either don't know about these "standards" or don't care. OP sounds like an overly invested Internet-obsessed shut-in.
