In The Drawing of the Three, when he pulls O/Detta into Midworld and Detta goes on multiple racist tirades against Roland and Eddie because she's been kidnapped from her own world by a couple of honkies.

TBH, I think the movie will do fine in the Asian markets. I doubt the books are as popular in China, and as a stand-alone action movie, Dark Tower was perfectly acceptable, if you go into it with no expectations.

The Asian market is also notoriously racist against black people. So I doubt it will.

Source?

Easily fixed with marketing. Put the focus on Matthew McConaughey and the kid, promo it as a fight between MM and the kid with Idris Elba as a mentor/sidekick. PLENTY of movies are deceptively advertised, the goal isn't always to be true to the movie, it's to get butts in seats.

I feel like there are plenty of other ways to keep the feeling of conflict in that scene (I mean, just being kidnapped from her own world is reason enough to fly off the handle at someone) without the race aspect, though.

Does Roland's race come up in the books? Absolutely. Is it integral to the plot? I don't feel it is. I don't feel like that aspect of that moment is so defining that it can't be altered while still keeping the feel of the books and characters intact.

I have not yet seen the film so I cannot speak to how well it did that job, I've heard mixed reviews and I'll likely have mixed feelings. I'm only saying that it's possible to adapt the books, cast a black actor to play Roland, and not destroy everything forever, regardless of whether the movie that exists did that job.

I do love Idris Elba, though, so I expect I will enjoy his performance regardless of how good the adaptation is. Hell, I will probably be picturing him when I read the books from now on, even if it leads to a few reality-breaking moments for me. (I will be picturing Idris Elba as the lead of as many of the books I read as possible, like, just... I feel like that's a good general rule of thumb for me, but you do you)

This, right here. I think people clinging to the idea Roland HAS TO BE WHITE OR OMG THE ENTIRE SERIES IS ROONED are just looking for an excuse.

Now, whether the movie holds together as a comprehensible whole or is just a confusing piece of crap as most Stephen King adaptations end up being, is another question. I don't think anyone will successfully adapt him until he's dead and has let go of the reins.

Very well said, anon.
