Here's my bet: he has a really, really good run. Gets to his early nineties at least, and stays sharp as a tack the whole way through. And he STILL doesn't finish the fucking books, because he stopped caring ages ago.

Seriously, he doesn't give a shit anymore. And it was really obvious in the last book.

Dude could live to be 110, and he's still never gonna finish that series.

The series will be finished, one way or another.

That might not necessarily include the book series... but hey, you never know. By this time next year, he could surprise us all and release the rest as a two or three part collection.

I would be pissed to if people kept on bringing up by death and only caring whether or not I finish a series. Entitled fucks.

That series is the only reason anyone gives a fuck about him. And he keeps promising it is just about to come out. It is his own fault.

Killing off the ones that cannot die is his specialty. Just when you are getting attached... off with their heads!

An unfinished, open ending would be better than a neat and bow tied ending. Those can easily ruin a good story.

I agree. I've seen so many things ruined because people gotta have their endings.

I have a friend who's crazy for his books and is always bringing up the fact that he hasn't finished them. She half-jokingly said that maybe he needed to get hit by a car like Stephen King and then maybe we'd get to see an ending.

tbh I hate that 'George R.R. Martin is not your bitch' thing in regards to him finishing the books. We bought his books, we paid him money for them, we have all the right to complain when he doesn't finish them. This isn't fanfic done for fun, it's his job and it's not like he's doing a bunch of other actual work like a day job that might keep him away from them. He just doesn't want to finish them anymore because he's made his money and he's bored, and while fans can't make him finish them people acting like it's so terrible for people who paid money for a book series on the unspoken agreement that it would be finished to get upset and constantly ask him about said finish can bite me.

Just because you bought his books doesn't mean he owes you something. You are being entitled.

I both agree with this and don't.

IMO, it's understandable that his readers are frustrated, and if they all just decided to ignore everything he creates from here on out, I would basically be like, serves you right dude.

But at the same time, writing a book series isn't the same as being contracted to build a house or something. If a contractor stops halfway through building a house, the house is worse than useless, and they have clearly not fulfilled their obligation. But if an author doesn't finish their book series...they just don't finish it. Writing one book is not a promise that you're going to write more, and readers should probably try to keep that in mind before they begin a series.

people paid for A book. the book that he wrote and finished. they're paying him after he's done the work, they're not paying him in advance for the books he might write.

he's really not obligated to do it, even if it's shitty

Remember when Feast For Crows ended with basically an apology for not covering any of the main characters or advancing any of the existing plot threads? And, you know, it was all going to be alright because all of that was going to be in the next book, he just couldn't fit it all in one volume because it'd be too long?

And then it took six years for the next book to come out?

I had more sympathy for Not Your Bitch when it was written, which was *eight years ago*. Every year that passes I get a little less understanding.

He doesn't give a damn about the story anymore. I got rid of my copies of GOT and quit watching the series. Better to move on than live in pointless hope.

I'd have more sympathy for him if he didn't keep adding new characters and plot threads while he still has so much he needs to wrap up. They aren't even interesting additions. Nothing happened in the last book. If he's so sick of writing it, why is he making things harder for himself like that.

He's old and he's overweight, so I would tend to agree he's not making it to ninety ... assuming he'd even finish the series by then.

As someone overweight, I tend to judge rich people who are overweight, because HELL if I had that money, I'd be hiring a personal trainer to come to me house and whip me into shape.
