For me, nostalgia isn't as much about the actual stuff as it is about the person I was when I was experiencing it. The things going on in my life. The way my buttoned-up dad danced to Quiet Riot. My best friend in the world during the sticker book craze. That summer my cousin and I cosplayed as Madonna. That girl scout camp when all of us had permanent imprints on our feet from jelly shoes.

This. It's not like that time period was so awesome, it's just that I have a lot of little, highly personal memories and experiences from that time that makes it special for me.

Exactly. For any time, it's more about what you were doing, and who you were with, and what made you happy.

Late response, I know...

I get that, but I just don't have a lot of connections between the stuff and who I was. I remember my childhood, but those memories are not linked to 80s pop culture, and I remember a lot of the pop culture, but I don't remember what was going on with me personally in connection to that stuff. For example, I remember jelly shoes, I think I even had a pair, but have no clue when those were popular and what I was doing or what I was like at the time I had them (sure as heck didn't wear them to Girl Scout camp - that would have been impractical).
