Re: If you had extreme political power

Well, I would hope people vote with more care than they take polls. (Though I do think polls can be manipulated pretty heavily.) Those numbers are a bit discouraging. But I still think we would have a lot less war if we got to VOTE BEFORE rather than listen to leaders trying to tell us why they were right AFTER.

I'm not saying that people are naturally warmongering or that women are horrible or anything like that. It's more that people can easily be manipulated by propaganda and strategic positioning of wars as "interventions" et cetera et cetera to be convinced into supporting them and it's much easier to vote for them when it's not your life and health on the line.

Historically speaking, most wars did have popular support before they were declared. There's always a period of deliberation before declaring war, especially in the non-interventionist period of US history, where opinion goes back and forth until a consensus is reached or some other event forces it to happen like Pearl Harbor. It's not because they were good and justified wars, but people wanted to go to them for various reasons or were convinced they needed to happen for the good of everyone.

If the votes on war were left to the people who would go fight in one, or if voting for the war automatically enlisted you into a draft no matter what since if you're voting for it, you'd surely go fight in it - now that would be a deterrent. But going by simple majority is not much different from the system we have now.

SA

Or for the old and disabled, you get "drafted" in the sense that you don't go and fight but if they need people to fill out noncombat roles, you're on the list to have your personal life disrupted, pulled out of your job or retirement, and be forced to serve your country in some way for the war you voted for.

Well, I think your proposal has some merit, and I will definitely consider replacing the simple majority vote with it. Thank you for your input in my dictatorship. :) We welcome all opinions that can help the people.

Haha well I'm glad to have got you to think about it!
