Well, they used to...they were called "music videos".

(Anonymous) 2017-08-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, they don't make music videos anymore? I really liked the ones that told a story.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-15 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
They do still make music videos

They're usually on youtube now instead of TV though

(Anonymous) 2017-08-15 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
And there used to be entire channels on cable devoted to them. They were called things like MTV and VH1, and they were full of glorious strutting and cheesy effects.

Those were good times.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-15 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
well, it's kind of a niche genre, you know

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Every book/show/film out of songs I've read/watched were terrible.

there are whole albums I think might make good movies (I'm old enough to remember music videos, both the fun ones and the godawful ones)

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
list some albums!

please!

I love albums that could make whole movie (a la Tommy or anything really)

most Beatles albums
any Bowie album
many Kinks albums
most earlier Rush albums
666 by Aphrodite's Child

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"the downward spiral" and "Year Zero" by Nine Inch Nails. Especially YZ; there was an entire ARG for it, and I think HBO had at one time thought of making a series based on it.

Stainless Style by Neon Neon! One of my all-time faves and not enough people have heard it.

You might like Ayreon. It's a progressive rock/metal band project with plenty of different concept albums/"rock operas".

Then there's Dream Theater's "Scenes from a Memory" which is another interesting concept album.

Also: Trans-Siberian Orchestra with "Beethoven's Last Night".

Brave Saint Saturn has interesting stuff as well. (Personally, I tend to ignore the part where they're officially a "Christian Rock" band though.)

One of the most classic concept albums is "The Wall" by Pink Floyd.

If you are any way into Japanese bands, Sound Horizon is quite interesting when it comes to their concept albums/shows. It's quite camp and a bit cringe at times but I do like them. (There are a few subtitled shows on YouTube I think.)

This secret reminded me that I had never actually watched the video for the Darkness's "I Believe in a Thing Called Love." So I did.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRYNYb30nxU

Slightly less cracktastic than I'd been led to believe.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck, this video (and the whole album) was everything to me and my family when it came out.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
YES!!!

FUCK his one piece suit made me believe there would be a resurgence of sex oozing rock gods of olde!!!

I have been disappointed.

I know right? In a time when bands like Coldplay were hugely popular, they were such a breath of fresh air.

I'll go one better. If Hollywood can do an entire musicals based on the Beatles, ABBA, Disco, and 80s pop, they can do one for metal. (Another one, not counting This Is Spinal Tap.)

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
But metal is way less popular than any of those things.

I mean, they could easily do it if they wanted to, but I don't think it has the audience. And I could spend all afternoon listing things I'd like Hollywood to do that clearly have no audience.

I don't know, there have been some terrible movies made from those things.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
For every Pirates of the Caribbean, there is a Haunted Mansion (or, Jesus, The Country Bears).

Mean Girls was good, but He's Just Not That into You wasn't really.

I liked Resident Evil, but a lot of video game movies are so bad, like epically.

Re: I don't know, there have been some terrible movies made from those things.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
re RE

Haha yeah, literally one of the movies plays the long opening scene in reverse right after it finishes forward. For what purpose?

They can't make movies out of video games..

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
They're pretty much universally awful. Hitman was atrocious. Assassin's Creed made me die a little inside with the ridiculous re-designed Animus and repeated, gratuitous sweeping shots of flying eagles every 3 seconds. Silent Hill threw any sense of subtlety and atmosphere under the bus in favour of HORROR.

Mortal Kombat is the only one I can tolerate because it completely embraced its campy source material.

+100 I haven't seen Mortal Kombat tho, so that means I haven't seen any video game movie that didn't suck hard.

I know it's not based on the music persay, but there was a Finnish metal band that did a horror film to kind of help promote themselves, or something to that effect.

Dark Floors

It reminded me a bit of Silent Hill.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-19 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Look up Imaginaerum by Nightwish, they made a movie using music from the album, kind of like a feature-length music video.
