Inspired by #1, what's the cringiest question you've ever seen someone ask at a con panel?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Or interview or whatever.

I thought it was funny but a lot of people on the subreddit(s, various ones about star wars) were embarrassed when an interviewer at Celebration in April asked Hayden what he thought about sand.

What did he answer?

That if it lead to the water, he could tolerate it, and he understood Anakin hating it because he grew up on a desert planet.

The question was cringey, but I think he answered it well.

Yeah. The internet thinks that joke is hilaaaarious...and it's really not, IMO.

I'm like OP in that I generally try to avoid those things, but I've occasionally come across people talking about someone showing very cringe-worth shipping fanart (like wincest) to actors at conventions.

I not only find that embarrassing but I think if the person showing the fanart isn't the artist in question then it's rude.

Less cringy and more annoying, but there is always one Roosterteeth fan who asks if Ray is coming back. STOP! HE ISN'T!

Some guy asked Felicia Day if the "carpet matched the drapes".

She didn't even know what he meant, one of the other guests sitting next to her had to explain.

oh god, I had Archer say that in a fic (not about Felicia Day, though)

...oh, dear.

Why on earth would somebody ever think that's an okay thing to ask?

I suppose it's too much to hope that the guy was escorted out by security for being such an unfunny douche...

That's not even cringey anymore, that's downright invasive.

It's awful to say, but I get secondhand embarrassment from fans with social anxiety when they go up and verbally trip over themselves asking a question. Double if it's an answer already known to the fandom. Triple if the panel didn't clearly hear what was said and someone needs to clarify it for them.

Other candidates for cringe include:
-Questions that are nsfw (like the carpet one mentioned above me)
-Questions/requests to acknowledge a popular fandom meme, especially ones that the panel likely doesn't know exists
-In voice-acting panels, requests for the VA/s to say something inappropriate in their character's voice/s
-But most of all, ANYTHING that makes the panel feel uncomfortable

I sat through the first Twilight movie panel at San Diego Comic Con while waiting for something else. I should've filled my life's secondhand embarrassment quota just by being in the room. Every time Pattison opened his mouth a mass scream swept through the room, a mom there with her daughters asked if he preferred older women, someone asked what kind of underwear he wore, and someone asked what it was like being the sexiest man in the world. Apparently at an interview later someone asked him what it was like and his answer was something about the sound you'd hear at the gates of hell. It was my introduction to Twilight fandom.

I've also heard someone ask an actress whose name I've forgotten if they'd star in a movie they were writing, but they were booed back to their seat by 2000+ people.

Audience member asked a panel of voice actors for a video game somewhat meandering questions about storytelling/writing/other game design decisions -- the panel shot each other slightly confused looks while the asker was speaking. On the flip side, the VA who ended up responding did manage to explain they weren't actually involved in any of that in an admirably evenhanded way.

And while it wasn't a question, in the same panel, a group of people decided to leave early for another event. They were being quiet, but it was a small room, so the panelists noticed and bantered a bit with them as they gathered up their stuff. But a couple decided to run with the attention and started loudly singing show tunes on their way out, grinding the rest of the q&a to a halt until they couldn't be heard anymore.

Number one for me is the Castle panel were some fan stumbled around their question so much until the modrator finally had to translate what was essentially "Have any stunt or something fucked with your head?"
