Maybe it's because we have the paperbacks or maybe it's a regional thing but there aren't any lions in our set of the books. But I've seen them in the show at least going back to s2 and they look like bog standard sigil lions. What's the difference?

That's weird. I have paperbacks (USA) and it shows all the sigils in the back of the book.

Wait, should I understand this secret to mean that you've never seen an in-show insignia (I have, and it's also on all the Lannister armors) or that we've never been shown an actual lion in the show even though its likeness is used for their house's insignia?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-18 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Acutal lion.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-18 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
...why would that matter? We've never seen an in-show kraken either and yet it's still the Greyjoy insignia.

Are you seriously asking this when the show has fucking dragons? At least a lion actually exists.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-18 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Lions exist, so why do we even need to see one in the show? Wolves and dragons are relevant to the plot, they aren't just in the show to justify house symbols.

But... a LOT of historical heraldry features lions without the people who chose those insignia without ever having seen a lion themselves.

This. Our Royal family has a lion on their insignia, and I can assure you there are no lions here, never been either.

I mean, yes, there probably were lions all over Europe at some point, based on fossil finds, but they definitely weren't there anymore in most parts when most of the coats of arms including them were devised. Which is pretty obvious when you look at plenty of medieval book illustrations of lions and other animals. They look more like very vague ideas of lions (as do some insignia lions, to be quite honest).

Except for in royal menageries, you're correct.
