You have a picture in your head what the character is supposed to look like and he doesn't fit it very well. But maybe see what he does with the role, he might surprise you (I remember everybody being confused when Hugh Jackman was cast as Wolverine).

Thanks to your description I'm picturing an Archie Kennedy-era Jamie Bamber (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/38/64/41/386441d14dd035bf9c84847b5aeab6fd.jpg) which is interesting because Sam Heughan reminds me of him a bit.
