There were already other companions who met earlier Doctors before Clara. I don't know if I ever saw "The Three Doctors" and I don't remember which characters all got to meet in "The Five Doctors" (all I really remember is Sarah Jane and Three, but they already knew each other), but Peri met Two and Jamie in "The Two Doctors."
