I let it go with it being a hallucination in Will Graham's fractured mind, the good design and in visuals with the stuff that's real. But yeah, the Wendigo is kind of shocking at first, but quickly starts to look silly.

Looks like it'd comically hit it's antlers into a door frame trying to get into a room.

It doesn't have a body, just an image of one, so it works like when a ghost walks through a wall. Size makes no difference.

Really? I kind of love it. I mean, I don't know any creepy special effects that benefit from being paused on some grainy resolution download and screencapped. Special effects imagery is meant to be seen the way it's shown - which in this case means mostly brief, contextually appropriate glimpses. The way they use the wendigo imagery in the show is very effective at communicating Will's sense of dread and intuitive understanding of what he's up against. Plus its sickly appearance can be seen as mirroring Will's own sickly mental state.

Basically, it is very believably something Will's mind instinctively invents in an increasingly ill and disturbed attempt to help him solve the dark mysteries he's become ensnared in.

It's not a horror movie monster. That's not the purpose it was intended to serve. If it's frightening, that's secondary to it's main purpose, which is its symbolic meaning within the narrative, as well as its implications about Will's mental state.

It's one of those designs that if you saw it while walking through the woods at night, you'd shit yourself, but in the daylight, looks kinda silly

I think it looks sillier the more like Mads it got but idk how they could have avoided that. (The scariest variation for me is whatever the fuck thing is that walks backwards in the cathedral.) On the other hand I didn't know what a wendigo was until I watched Hannibal so I'm no expert. ;)
