It's a longstanding observation that affairs in fiction are much more likely to be portrayed positively when a married woman cheats with an unmarried man. When a married man cheats with an unmarried woman, he's usually scum.

Seems like this is usually because the cheated-on man in positively portrayed affairs is abusive or an asshole.

Sure, but - she didn't actually cheat on him.

I never gave a shit about them or Riley/Will. Their scenes were repetitive and only saved by how cutely comedic Kala's actress' can be. If they wanted to do something interesting with them, they could've explored how Wolfgang's violence/anger/self-destructiveness was a part of her.

Agreed.

I could have grudgingly tolerated Kala/Wolfgang as the obligatory het romance, but ugh, Riley/Will. Riley/Will pretty much ruined the show for me. I still haven't watched season two because I'm so dreading seeing even more screen time get wasted on their romance.

I loooved Riley in season one because she was adorable and positive despite the shit that had happened to her, but then in season two she was...essentially just one half of Will, and I lost all interest. That relationship is so dull.

Um - she didn't have sex with him. She didn't have sex with her own *husband*. She hung out with him, she sang with him, i think (???) they kissed maybe once, but she did *not* have sex with him, and though she doesn't love her husband *and* she loves Wolfgang, she repeatedly put the brakes on anything and tried very hard to be a loving wife, the best way she could.

So...maybe no.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Are you saying it's not cheating if they didn't have sex?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about tabaqui, but yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Yes, they maintained an ongoing emotional connection that would undoubtedly be difficult for any spouse to accept, but it's just plain disingenuous to act like "They hung out and she wanted to fuck him but she was married so she didn't" is the same thing as "She fucked someone other than her spouse." One is in fact cheating; the other is in fact not.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
emotional affairs are a thing, anon

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But they're not the same thing as the kind where you're fucking someone else. Let's not act like they are the same, it's just silly.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not the same but can be equally devastating.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2017-08-20 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. Conversation, literal life-saving, and flirting is *not* cheating.

It looked like they were heading in the direction of having Rajan turn out to be shit so Kala could leave without feeling guilty, but then they dragged the story out too long. And they already dragged it out too long before that twist! And what happened to the conflict in that plot revolving around religious conflict, anyway? Bah to all of it.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-08-19 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
They spent so much time dropping plot bunnies that never got much of a followup. It's pretty obvious that Rajan's Father, Sun's Brother, Capheus's gangster sponsor, and Wolfgang's money laundering gang are all going to end up connected to the conspiracy somehow, but gold dildo gay director was apparently more important.

I really didn't like this ship, not so much because of the infidelity, but for people who supposedly are empaths to a high degree, they spent way too much time dithering and contradicting themselves about what they really wanted.

I find it a really boring ship. I don't think the show was trying to paint her husband negatively though.
