Sometimes I think, especially for women actors, this is because they're not allowed to use their full range of facial expressions because it might be too ~~ugly.

This annoys me in TV so much, if I've been crying it takes a whole fucking day for the puffy eyes and red nose to wear off. I weirdly appreciate seeing women in TV/films who do a really good ugly-cry, because that's how it should look to me,

Nah, that's true of all actors, male and female. Part of conveying intense emotion as an actor involves reining it in.

When Homeland was a big thing I would see so much criticism of Claire Danes looking ugly when she cried. Like...who looks pretty when they cry?? Why is that what you're paying attention to?
