Favourite paintings/pieces of art

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
A very talented artist friend offered to paint something for my new apartment. I'm more than happy to take her up on it, but I have no clue what kind of motif I would like.

FS, what are your favourite paintings or pieces of art? If you found them online, please post links as well. I need some inspiration.

Art Nouveau, particularly Alphonse Mucha. Not only are the women in his paintings gorgeous (and could easily be adapted if you wanted a woman to look more Asian, Indian, African, etc.), but just the regular sort of design work he excelled at makes an awesome resource for things, like decorative bits around windows or doors, or really neat edges around the tops of a wall, things like that.

Sorry for Pinterest, but it shows work with figures in them as well as just the graphic design stuff. https://www.pinterest.com/explore/art-nouveau-design/?lp=true

Seconding this so hard. We had to pick an artist to focus on for our second year college project and I picked Mucha, I swear it's the most fun project I ever did. Just gorgeous stuff.

Third edition. Mucha's work is lovely. I also love the colour palettes he chose.

Ivan the Terrible (etc.) is just such a harrowing painting, don't you think? I mean, look at his EYES. He's just killed his son! He looks like he's in h e l l.

Yes! The expression on his face is phenomenal.

Those eyes are insanely good. Like scary good. I can barely do a portrait of someone with a neutral expression; the amount of intensity in the faces of his work is amazing.

That Ivan one is so horrifying, and yet hard to look away from. Holy shit.

Oh wow. Never seen her stuff before but I'm converted. Such a good grasp of light source/shadows which I never quite got. Beautiful.

I like graphical nature scenes, especially (but not exclusively) landscapes of the upper Midwest US.

I've always liked stuff like the third image, when a light source is striking part of a subject that's in a darker enviroment

Georgia O'Keeffe's work has stuck with me since college. My dad's always been a huge Salvador Dali fan and always had his paintings on the walls, so that rubbed off on me growing up. Gustav Klimt is another favourite. If I had the cash to had any of these in massive prints on my wall, I wouldn't have any wall space left.

I love many of Vincent van Gogh's nature paintings. "Almond Blossom" is my favorite. There's just something about the colors and composition that makes me feel peaceful.

I have a huge fondness for René Magritte's work. Very realistic, but juxtaposing that realism with weirdness. I love surrealism and I feel Magritte did it best.
