I actually find it really fun to drop heavy-handed hints on purpose so that my readers get a lightbulb moment 1/3 of the way through, while my protag remains clueless until the big reveal at the end. Then we can laugh at my protag together as he bumbles along not knowing the secret everyone else knows.

Hilariously, roughly 1/2 of my readers catch on immediately, while the other 1/2 go "holy shit, I never saw that coming!" at the big reveal.
