I'm not the OP, but when you think about it, fandom and religion really aren't that different. There are BNF's, divisions within the "fandom" about different canon interpretations, and massive amounts of wank. Basically, the religious "fandom" is a bunch of people getting together to bond over their common interest, which is what I think the OP was getting at.

No, I gathered the similarities. However, if OP is implying that she sees fandom as a sort of religion, in which they believe everything is mostly true and would have happened, then. Uh. Yeah.

I don't believe in any religion, but insinuating to a religious person that believing in a higher power is akin to fangirling Harry Potter is just a tad insensitive.

However, I have hopes the OP may just be trolling.

Oh, in that case I agree with you completely. I interpreted the secret another way, but if the OP meant what you said, then yea, there is some kind of problem.

Haha, I know it's probably that they meant to non-religious people, believing in a religion is like fandom, but to a religious person who puts a lot of faith and belief into it, it's probably seen the other way around. xD;

Then again, I just have a really religious family and I may be a tad oversensitive to pleasing them.

LOL, no, that's not what I think at all! I was merely pointing out that the amount of devotion religious people have towards religion is just like the devotion fandom has for... fandom. And that I find religion infinitely more frightening. I'm not trolling, this is really what I think. Sorry if it offends you. That's part of the reason it's a secret.

Haha, I'm not religious, I can easily see why religion seems like a big fandom to you, honest. I'm just saying religious people might not take it as well, since it's a big part of who they are, and if they think as little about fandom as is... idk. It's probably more hurtful than not. Of course, I don't know your friend so idk how serious they'd take that. xD

orz I know, religion can be seriously frightening.

I'm a Christian... I can tell you that the wording struck me as mildly insulting, but nothing really "hurtful." Then, I've been in online fandom in one way or another for a long time and I've seen a lot of things said, a lot of the attitude toward religion, Christianity in particular, that seems to run in most fandom communities. I understand it, too - from an "outside" perspective, we Christians are pretty weird.

I think we're a bit weird and I am one.

I took it more as the OP expressing frustration at being annoyed by Christians in their life who don't "get" geekery.

Hmm. I see honest faith as one thing, "frightening religious obession" as another - both it and fandom can be taken too far, used as an excuse to be crappy to people and such - and it will happen with anything because we're all human.
