Fandom and faith are not the same thing. To even think such a response hints the OP probably is obsessive and is excusing it by trying to claim faith is unimportant and doesn't warrant the amount of attention some people grant it.

Whoa. Reading a little too much into it, anyone?

It seems to me more of a slightly inappropriate comment due to frustration at certain kinds of Christians than anything else.

Besides, while I completely agree that fandom ≠ faith, you have to admit that looking at the history of Christianity, they do have their similarities. Except that when wanking about different interpretations of canon, they took "flaming" a little more literally.

Fandom and faith may not be the same thing, but from the POV of an unbeliever God (or enter-deity-of-your-choice) is still a fictional character who is about as real as, say, Harry Potter.

To then constantly run into people talking about Their Personal Relationship With God (and possibly prodding you to join the group) can get a bit tiresome. Not to mention creepy.
