The story of Firewatch is how isolation and loneliness can affect people and their perception. A lonely woman attaches to someone she hears and makes a mental image in her head for. She didn't know anything about the fire, and things like the, "No, he doesn't know" is her talking to another person she has contact with as part of her job (as revealed in the final cave), and she was talking about the downed line. She didn't know as much as we thought she did.

I took away that it was a story about stewardship and responsibility. As someone still finishing their development into an adult, I think a LOT about it.
