Re: What are you a snob about?

Re why some stores have pockets sewn shut: the store I work at there is a big stealing problem, and one thing people will do is take the censor tags off clothes and then shove them in the pockets of other clothes so we don't find the evidence until who knows how long later. So that is probably a reason.

Speaking from the design part of stores, it's to encourage women to buy purses.

Notice how jeans geared towards men tend to actually have pockets...

... where do you all live/shop that this is actually true? I have never in my life bought or even tried on pants/jeans that didn't have pockets.

NA

Pretty sure about half of the pants at American Eagle at any given time don't have pockets. And RW&Co have a lot of pants that are like half-trouser half-legging, and those never have pockets either. I also have a pair of waxed jeans from Joes Fresh that don't have pockets.

Basically anything that is a hybrid pant-legging probably doesn't have pockets.

So it's apparently an American thing? Because that doesn't apply at all where I live. (Leggings with pockets would look terrible anyway because the fabric is too thin and the fit too tight for the pockets not to be ugly anyway so i don't see the problem. Leggings are not the type of clothing you wear if you want pockets.)

Yeah its at least an american thing, not sure about other places. And idk if this is what above anon meant, but skinny jeans will semi frequently not have pockets at all (the infamous "fake pocket") or have tiny unusable pockets you could maybe fit a tube of lipstick into.

YeH that sounds annoying. That explains a lot.

IDK, I'm Canadian and it's definitely an issue here too, but then, the majority of our clothing stores are American, so.

Leggings are not the type of clothing you wear if you want pockets.

Depends on how thin and legging-like the fabic is. Jeggings are NOT leggings, after all. The fabric used for jeggings is often just as thick as the fabric used for jeans, they just add an extra couple percent of lycra to the mix and presto, jeggings! Ditto legging-like trouser pants. I have two pairs and they could absolutely have pockets if the designer had wanted them too. I mean, I could (and do) wear these legging-esque trouser pants to work, that's how much they resemble a slim-fitting trouser.

That actually explains a lot! I'm also Canadian and yeah, we do sometimes get the "these pockets suck" thing, but... not as much, in my personal experience, as I've seen Americans complain about it. I don't usually have a hard time finding jeans with decent enough pockets - even when I'm shopping at a chain store that originated in America. Oddly enough, I own a pair of denim shorts I bought in America, which I love, they're really pretty, but holy fuck, the pockets were not designed with a smartphone in mind. They'll hold anything else alright. But I'm always worried about my phone, whenever I stick it in there, for a sec.

I'm the Canadian commenting above you, and I don't really think this is the issue. When I complain about pants with no pockets, I'm not complaining because it's hard to find pants with decent pockets. I'm complaining because there are as many pants as there are without pockets. Because fuck that. The companies that make and design clothes don't seem to have any problems grasping the concept that pockets are a necessity when they're designing men's pants. But then they make women's pants and it's like, "Oh, lets leave out pockets so we can shave that tiny extra bit of bulk off her silhouette. Because she totally won't mind having her loose change rattling around in the bottom of her purse where she can't find it when she needs it, if it means her hips look a millimeter slimmer!"

Or what if I want to go out without bringing a purse, because all I need for that outing is my phone/money/keys...but then my stupid dumbass pants force me to carry a purse anyway, because I HAVE NO POCKETS.

It's rage inducing.

I guess it could be annoying, yeah. Personally, I rarely use my pockets for anything but VERY temporary storage. Usually stuff I'm just going to grab again in a few minutes and don't want to have to root around in my purse for.

I'm also the kind of person who literally NEEDS a purse of sizable holding, because I how much I tend to bring with me, "just in case" (I like a purse that can fit a whole light jacket in it, and still have room) - and the random things I usually tend to acquire along the way.

I know, I fit pathetically into gender roles - but I feel like, if I were a guy, I'd still be the kind of human who hates leaving the house without a pile of totally unnecessary things that they probably won't use but, you know, might.

It depends where you look. I buy jeans from Old Navy and their basic jeans always have pockets. I'm sure they offer some styles that don't, though. It might be harder with slacks but, fortunately, I hardly ever have to wear those. It's not so much "Nothing has pockets" as "Lots of options don't have pockets" so if you want functional pockets, you always have to check first if what you're trying on has them, and you may be more limited in styles and colors than if you didn't care about pockets either way.

My job involves a lot of work outdoors and I buy my field clothes at the Goodwill. I usually go for women's khakis and cargo pants and it's amazing how many women's khakis don't have decent pockets. Maybe you'll get a front pocket but the back pocket will be a teeny-tiny decorative thing. Completely useless to me, since I need to be able to shove tools and things in there. I always have to check the pockets carefully before I buy, and I'm only willing to buy ones without good rear pockets if there are cargo pockets down the leg, although this is not ideal (I want rear pockets *and* cargo pockets - it's actually the front pockets I don't use much because putting things in there gets in the way of bending over, but they are still useful for things like keys and bandanas that are small or squishy).

I like cooler weather because then I can wear jackets and other layers with pockets (both normally and for outdoor work) so I don't have to rely on pants pockets.
