We believe in compassionate consumerism, and in giving as much back to the community as we can through charitable contributions, volunteer work, and by supporting fair trade and self-sustaining growers whenever possible. We participate in the Green Power for a Green LA program at work and in our homes, and have participated in fundraisers for many fine organizations, including the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, the Orangutan Foundation UK, AIDS Project Los Angeles, Covenant House, the Red Cross, and the Humane Society.

Right there on the web site. Why the hell would they change that suddenly? You, dear secret poster, appear to have accidentally drunk a bottle of BPAL, which is affecting your brain.

Yes. So where does it mention that any part of eBay profits go to charity these days? I know, I know, Neil Gaiman scents, orangutans, five eyed kittens, etc. etc. I didn't post the secret and maybe I'm reading it wrong. It seems to be referring to eBay profits.

OP here. i don't really doubt the Lab's charitable actions in most areas, and i think their varied interests you list above is really fantastic. i also don't think the Lab is REQUIRED to donate any of their proceeds to charity. what they do with their money is their own business.

that being said, i do remember the days when a very very rare bottle (or five) would go onto ebay with each auction carrying the following disclaimer "all proceeds are directed to [some charity which OP does not remember except for a lot of stuff about battered womens' shelters, which is all good by me]." i also recall these auctions happening a lot less frequently.

then a particular auction where the lab stated "due to rising costs, profits for this item will be poured back into R&D." I AM FINE WITH THIS. like i said, the lab can do whatever it wants with its money, long live capitalism.

since then, the auctions have become more frequent, with even RARER oils popping up in surprising quantities, with no mentions of where the money is going. i've seen TWO queries, one in [livejournal.com profile] sinandsalvation and one on that (laughably) impartial forum asking about the charitable destinations AND why so many rares? in each case it has been the FANGIRLS who have jumped to the Lab's defense, saying "of courrrrse they are still donating, duhhh." The Lab has not actually said one way or the other.

obviously this bothers me because i think a lot of fangirls are so swept up in the beth!love that they can't imagine she would need funds to make six dozen new limited edition oils per year, or put her kid in pirate onesies. it bothers me that ted lists these auctions with a wink and a nudge more frequently without even offering a charity name. Yules from 2005? those have actually been sitting around the Lab shelves that long gathering dust?

I MEAN, really, either they're horribly mismanaging their inventory or they're making that many bottles ahead of time, anticipating the ebay funds. it smells like crap, either way.
