OP : My problem with your argument against "positive" is they did that already in NGE, except the character's name was Toji, and he was around for a lot longer than 8 episodes so there was a lot more attachment. I honestly didn't care that Kamina died because he didn't develop that much, and so I had nothing to be attached to. My only thoughts on his death was, "Wow, they actually killed him? Weird!"

Though since you seem to have found so much more from GL, I would love to know what you saw in it. Most people have been saying to me, "GL just isn't that deep! It's just big robots fighting each other and it's fun! You're digging too deep, shut up and just enjoy!" so I'm very interested in what you got out of it.

I'm confused even more - why would you bring Suzuhara Tōji into discussion? He was killed (only crippled in the anime) by his let's say "friend", and that is quite typical to shounen. The rivalry theme and shit. The "last ditch effort" Kamina died of, is also a thing that you see in shounen often, but it is considered a good thing and never kills people that are not sidekicks. By all laws of the genre, Kamina was supposed to be hurt badly and spend a couple of months in a hospital.

I immediately give up on explaining how and why did I get attached to Kamina and how and why was I affected by his death. No offense, but it's just like explaining a joke to a person who didn't get it - you can bring many arguments to why it was funny, but without genuine desire to understand coming from the other side it's hopeless and can only spoil the fun.

As for the general TTGL impact... well, hard to tell in general, especially to a person who thinks (or was tricked into thinking) that TTGL is just about big robots - I was honestly quite shocked to learn such people exist (maybe because I watched the series alone and discussed it only with friends of my level, and never been a part of this fandom). I'll go with a couple of examples that come to my mind right away.

One of the most obvious themes was the evolution of trust models. This is not directly linked to growing up as such, I know lots of people twice my age who don't really believe in themselves, but just in the images of how other people perceive them. It is also arguable that the change Kamina enforces on Simon is indeed "evolution", but let's not go into philosophical discussion here.

Another thing is for example the path Rosyu took when he grew up. He's overly controversial even for anime: you can say he means well, but still he is one fucked up son of a bitch, always doing the wrong thing. I am not even talking about him arresting Simon - that was just an exemplified limit of how far he could go, and was only shown to us to demonstrate that he can actually go even farther. What I really mean is for instance the scene when they are on a huge ship evacuating from the Earth, and they learn about spiral power. Rosyu agrees and understands, and then hangs up and says to his subordinates that they will only wait for a couple of minutes and then run away. This action immediately and completely destroys anything that Gurren-dan has achieved on that day before. He is unimaginably cowardly, up to the point that he starts to look like a useful character and still hinders everyone. This maps to so many things in real life, but then again, I do not participate in political discussions on LJ.
