Yes, underlying messages of absolutely positivity are bad. That's just not how life works. I would love if you could just take a stupid sentiment (Believe in you because I believe!) and use it to accomplish everything, but that's really just now how life works, and it's terribly naive to believe something like that. Being positive about things is fine and dandy, but there's a difference between being positive and being naive. Sheer determination is never enough, that's just not the way life works. Any anime that tells you such is spewing unrealistic bullshit.

Speaking of how I wanted to kill myself was just to make a point about the range of emotion Eva was able to invoke.

You're right, taking a sentiment doesn't make something happen, but when you're at the end of your rope and you don't even have that sentiment, that what do you have? Maybe you and I just react differently to the same shows, because Eva made me want to kill myself, but only out of boredom, whereas Gurren Lagann (at least the bits with Kamina) got me really pumped up to go out and make something of myself.

And it's not the way life works, but sitting around being a pessimist gets even less done than sheer determination, you know? It's been that sort of mindset that got me casted into six shows after living in Los Angeles for four months, and what even kept me interested in being an actor in the first place. For someone whose job relies entirely on themselves, we need that sort of blind optimism to keep ourselves going, or otherwise we'd just quit and regret that we never tried.

OP : Ah, well in that case I can't help but pity you. It's a shame that you need an assault of bright colours, gravity-defying boobage, and explosions in order to enjoy something; you're missing out on a lot.

You do raise a point that sitting around being pessimistic doesn't get you anywhere. However, this still does not change the fact that pure determination will allow you to accomplish anything. 6 minor parts does not equal one extremely major, meaningful one where you actually learn something from your experience, sorry to say. I have also been an actor and I understand how hard it is, and kudos for you to getting yourself out there like that. But after a certain point determination will only get you so far, and then you might actually have to improve yourself in order to accomplish anything more. Or you could just scream really loud and hope a couple extra drills pop out of your shoulder, whichever you prefer.

Haha, don't be so quick to judge! Honestly, I found Gurren Lagann to be kind of bland myself--I really only took interest in Kamina. I can't really excuse the bright colors, since Gankutsuou is one of my favorite shows, but another one is "Now and Then, Here and There", which is not only devoid of most colors, but of gravity-defying boobage as well. ;) I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. It's hella depressing, though.

*snort* True (haven't tried the drill bit yet, but I'm sick so I'll save the screaming for later XD). But it doesn't change the fact that it's still necessary to get anywhere. For example, if you do hit a standstill and find that you need to improve to get anywhere, someone lacking in determination would drop off whatever path they were following, whereas someone who had it dead-set in their mind would go out of their way to better themselves at *fill in the blank*.

I do agree with you, to a point. That sort of reckless positivity and determination is more like the base of the pyramid to success, I think. And while I don't necessarily see the world as sunshine and rainbows, it is nice to humor the thought sometimes.
