I don't think it's sexist. And it's not limited to men. How many women want their husbands hanging around with them and their friends at their "book club"?

People need to spend time with people other than their spouses. If they have a hobby that they share with friends, it's very easy to see why they don't really want their spouse tagging along.

I think it's arguably sexist in the way it's framed. If you say "men" as a group don't want their wives and girlfriends around, that's basing it on some supposedly natural trait of men.

Not wanting your spouse around all the time and having separate hobbies is totally natural for a lot of people, but it's not because they're men and they aren't all men.

It's sexist because the show doesn't say "partners (regardless of gender) don't want partners sharing their hobbies", it specifically said that men don't really want women sharing their hobbies and cited that women exhibiting dismissive scorn for men's hobbies was not only normal, but natural.

Does a man really have the right to say what woman as a whole want out of a relationship?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-25 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Definetly not!

Did you actually read the secret? OP is talking apples and you're talking oranges.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
What OP was annoyed at was that the character assumed that this was ALWAYS the case, for every couple, for every hobby, and that the levels of interest ALWAYS break down along gender lines.

Do you think the show is endorsing the viewpoint, or it is just the opinion of one character?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Not the op but...

Hard to say. It comes from the mouth of one character, but then all the female characters display reactions from mild boredom and disinterest to outright scorn in the metal detecting hobby. Except for two lesbians. So... yeah.

Not OP.

I think the show was endorsing it.

I love the show! IMO it was the character making the statement not the show, and it felt right for the kind of character he is.

There's sexist bullshit in S2 as well, where women shame a man for having feelings and being his child's primary caregiver.

TBH that part was very poorly written, and really, really pissed me off. Both as the mockery of men, and writing these women as assholes who only respect 'alpha males.' GRR

The primary audience is male, and they don't need this shit reinforced. Having said that, you root for the caring father, and sexist moments aside, it's a good show.

"The primary audience is male, and they don't need this shit reinforced."

I agree 100%. I enjoy the show but it definitely has a very male-centric viewpoint about issues like this and it frequently takes the easy way out in terms of gender-based roles and humor.
