Because he was described as very ambiguous in manner of race in the book (that was kind of his one main description) and the actor is not "ambiguous" at all.

DA But of course if he had been racially ambiguous like Wentworth Miller or someone, it would have been "whitewashing".

I doubt it. Majority of fandom is very protective of white-passing POCs. Probably because a lot of peole in fandom are white-passing POCs themselves. The complaints against them are rare and usually trashed by the rest of fandom.
