I feel like if your power was mind-reading, you'd either become an isolated misanthrope and eventually go insane, OR you'd develop an extremely zen view of people, and develop a very deep, abiding love for the people you chose to have in your life.

Actually, now that I think about it, that would make a kind of cool story: one mind-reader who went the dark way, and one who went the light way. And eventually they meet...and then whatever happens from there.
