My niece is twelve and she's almost as tall as me. I definitely couldn't carry her on my hip. I'd probably break my back and she'd get pissed off, wondering why I was treating her like a baby. I do carry twelve-year-olds at work (special ed teacher here), but never on my hip. Even the smallest ones are too big for me to do that and it's pretty unsafe to carry them like that.
