I don't have much experience with kids, so I'm no expert, but I do sometimes run into situations in fic where I think "That really doesn't sound like how a kid that age would talk/act." I think it can be hard to represent children who are old enough to carry on a conversation and are not talking in baby-talk, but nevertheless will sound much less sophisticated than an adult or teenager, even if it's a smart kid.
