Re: The new Taylor Swift single

I like it okay, but I'm kind of trying to manage my disappointment rn because I think it's not nearly as good as most of her stuff. I have tremendous respect for Taylor, and how well she handles her career and how well she seems to understand the complex workings of fame and the music industry. So I'm a little baffled by her latest move, because I think she miscalculated on this one pretty badly.

Firstly, I think she's putting out new music a full year too early for the public to be genuinely ready for more Taylor Swift.

Second, I think it's extremely unclear whether the sentiments expressed in LWYMMD are serious, or just a darker, more cynical follow up in the vein of Blank Space - and that's a problem.

Third, I think a wholesale dis track (even a scathingly tongue in cheek one, if that's what it is) was not at all the right material to come out with right now. She was in such a good position to let the Katy and Kanye beef go, and get her "revenge" in the most healthy and awesome way: by being the professional and musical powerhouse she is and succeeding too hard to have time for that shit. The fact that she fell back on a dis track feels uncharacteristically blinkered for Taylor.

And fourth, as soon as I heard LWYMMD, I thought, "She released this a month too soon. She should have released this right around the beginning of October and had it be kind of a stealth Halloween track." It's got that creepy, dark, but slightly camp sound that would be perfect for the Halloween season. But as it is, I don't think LWYMMD is good enough to have that kind of longevity on the charts. It'll be on its way out before Halloween is upon us.

The one thing that I'm trying to keep in mind is that I don't really think the first two singles off 1989 were all that great either
