Pon far episodes are usually an excuse for writers to go what the fuckery with their Vulcan characters and actors. Almost always a uniform gets ripped in the process. It's the Seven Year Itch on PCP.

Alternately, I suppose you could view it as an acting workshop exercise. The actor who normally slips in snark under a smooth facade of restraint gets to chew the scenery for a week of filming.
