Re: Consent in Star Trek

I always assumed that these consent issues were another reason for Vulcans doing arranged marriages. That way the two were psychically linked, had an informed idea of what would happen, and the consent stuff worked out before Pon Farr started. That said, the fact that the solution was arranged marriages of children is... unfortunate. You would think like such a logical species could have figured something else out.

Then again, some people said they think the Vulcans who go through Pon Farr have some control. I would say they do to a certain extent? Like, depending on how bad the Pon Farr gets and how good their mental control is. So maybe it's similar to consent issues with alcohol? It depends on how intoxicated you are. One sip isn't going to impair you but a lot will. Also, different people have difference tolerance levels.

Well now I can't stop wondering what happens when a Vulcan in the deep throes of pon farr forces themself on another party. Like, in that episode of Enterprise: If T'Pol had her way with Phlox, would the conversation still be about HER ability to consent? Who am I kiding, at that point the conversation would have been entirely about those evil misogynist male writers.

I think without bringing up shitty writers it would be a case of both parties being raped? Like, neither consented to the act.
