The script didn't make him act like a douche off set in the name of "method acting"

Idk it sounds like the director certainly encouraged it. They both sound as bad as each other.

I didn't see Suicide Squad (was sad to hear it sucked) so am unfamiliar with the issues, but from the clips it seemed like he was going a great Joker. I'm glad it was taken in a different direction than Heath Ledger.

it was pretty much the same direction but edgier and cringe

It seems like he was pretty OK with that vision of the character. Also, there were lots of stories during the promotion of the film about him being a total creepy-ass weird to try to get "in character", which seems dumb and contributes to the idea that he had creative agency with regards to the character. Also, he kind of seems like a dickhead for reasons totally unrelated to Suicide Squad, so fuck him.

I honestly had no issues with his Joker. Yes it was different than Ledger's--who was different than Nicholson's, who was different than Romero's--but to me it felt like it fit with the tone of the movie, which was a little campy/cheesy.

I just think that, compared to the fuss they made about his Joker, he wasn't actually in the movie a lot.

I don't really care about the movie at all. I care that he was an asshole to other people on and off set. It's unprofessional and people reacting to that are simply the consequences of the actions he chose to take.

Yeah I thought most people's issue with Leto were more about how he acted off-screen, not on it. I mean, every time I see people complaining (which is justified IMO given the shit he pulled off) it's always about him being a real asshole to his coworkers and others.

i think it's a mixture. if you act that shitass rude off-screen in the name of your role then it better be fucking amazing acting, and it wasn't.

it was fine for the movie, a very toothless edgy action flick. it didn't require deep levels of immersing yourself in the mind of the joker. it wasn't, like, the killing joke

Plus, Mark Hamill played Joker all the time and his coworkers never had to endure Leto's level of shitty acts. Instead, he just acts like himself because he knows it's just a role, he's an actor, and he knows how to not be a dick. (As far all I know.)

+1. Leto is a cunt for the sake of being a cunt, off screen to add insult to injury, and OP is dead wrong.

I didn't find this version creepy tbh, just really stupid and tryhard. I don't blame Leto for my dislike of this version but any iffy feelings I have towards him are due to the accounts of stuff he pulled while on-set.

Creepy? Only in the sense that goth dudes on the internet who want to introduce you to their 'twisted mind' are creepy. Not Hannibal Lector creepy. Not even "is that man following me or is he just walking in the same direction down this street at night with no-one else around" creepy.
Just... offputting-creepy.
