I know "Check, Please!" is a hockey-related gay YA comic that's kinda big right now. Maybe that's inspiring people to write more hockey-related stuff, if you meant the latter?

Not OP, but I've seen a bunch of sports AUs, hockey among them, although I don't know if it's more popular than other sports. Might depend on the fandom.
