Tony pointing out Galaga didn't seem like a shoehorned reference to me. Then again, I still play games from the 80s and 90s, so what do I know?

Ehh...it did come out of nowhere and had no relevance to the context of the conversation. This isn't surprising given that Downey ad-libbed it.

What I mean is, it didn't feel shoehorned in the sense that "OMG MUST MENTION SOMETHING FROM THE 80s!!!!" And I find it hilarious to randomly tattle on some guy to draw attention away from you.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that did feel a little try hard.

I went to high school in the 80s and sometimes this annoys me too. It wasn't even my favorite part of Stranger Things, though I agree it was well done there. I've said this before but I think I had enough of the 80s in the 80s.

Agreed. I do like shows that are set in the 80s like HALT AND CATCH FIRE and THE AMERICANS. I just think they're great stories with interesting characters. But this 80s comeback shit is annoying. Like, I hated the 80s when I was living it the first time. I also hated that point in the 80s when the 60s was making its comeback with Dirty Dancing, covers of 60s songs, and all of those Vietnam war movies.

Same. It's why I'm not looking forward to the Ready Player One movie.

I didn't care much for the 80s while they were going on, and remember, the Orange Nazi Asshole is very much a product of that era.

But then the 80s also gave us BlackAdder and A Bit of Fry and Laurie, so... ;)

this is true

I didn't even think it was a reference. I just thought the whole joke was that a guy was playing a game when he's supposed to be piloting this super secret base and monitoring threats or whatever. Then again

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
(Contd) I was born in the 90s.

Damn mobile phone, posting before I'm done

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
That is the joke, but I don't think it was a coincidence that it was a game from the 80s. Because honestly, if someone IS goofing off and playing a game when they're supposed to be working, what are the odds it'd be Galaga?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
The joke was that you fight off an army of aliens in Galaga... Like the Avengers did later in the movie.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I felt like it would have made more sense for the guy to be playing solitaire or something ubiquitous like that.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Galaga is a game where you fight invading aliens. The Avengers fight aliens in the movie. That is why they have the guy playing Galaga instead of Solitaire or Freecell.

It didn't feel shoehorned or like an appeal to nostalgia to me, but what do I know? I wasn't even alive in the '80s.
