Really? You would say that you're doing it in bad faith or intentionally reading it incorrectly?

I mean, people get up in their emotions and say things that are more extreme than they would say if they were being totally calm and rational. I understand that. But you really read something negatively when you know that's not the correct reading?

I asked a question because I was surprised by what I understood them to be saying, and because I wasn't sure if I understood it right. I really was not trying to be polemic, and if the reply came across as polemic, then I apologize.

Well, no. Ayrt was asking for clarification and their comment is hardly overreacting or being deliberately dickish just 'cause. Unless OP is super sensitive and prone to overreacting about replies that are just trying to carry on a civil discussion, then no, comments like ayrt's aren't what they're talking about.
