some old bat in a Mercedes damn near ran me over when I was trying to cross the street (WITH the light!) in front of my apt bldg. I said "just because you have a Mercedes...." and she squawked "I DIDN'T SEE YOU!!" like that meant it was OK.

You were in no way wrong to be upset, and she really should've just said "I'm so sorry."

But "just because you have a Mercedes..." does imply that you thought she DID see you and was just too snobby and self-entitled to give a fuck. So I understand why her response was to say that she didn't see you.
